An intimate wedding is a smaller wedding celebration that typically includes fewer than 25 guests and prioritizes meaningful experiences, personal connections, and intentional moments over a large guest list. As an Indiana intimate wedding photographer, I love helping couples create wedding days that feel less like a checklist and more like a true reflection of their relationship.
If you’ve been deep in wedding planning, you’ve probably seen the words elopement, micro wedding, and intimate wedding tossed around like they all mean the same thing. They’re definitely related, but each one has its own vibe.
Elopement
Think of an elopement as the ultimate “let’s do this our way” wedding. It might be just the two of you and your kids, or just a couple of friends. Instead of planning a packed schedule, you’re planning an experience—whether that’s exchanging vows at sunrise, hiking up a mountain, or tide pooling after your beach ceremony.
Micro Wedding/Intimate Wedding
A micro wedding lands somewhere in the middle, usually with 10–30 guests. You still get the ceremony, the dinner, maybe even a first dance—but without feeling like you have to make small talk with your second cousin’s roommate for five minutes. It’s all the best parts of a wedding, just scaled down.
Traditional Wedding
Traditional weddings are typically larger celebrations with 50+ guests, a full reception, and all the classic wedding traditions. They’re amazing for couples who love a big party—but they’re definitely not the only way to get married.
There’s no wedding planning committee handing out awards for hitting the perfect guest count, but here’s a general idea:
At the end of the day, your guest list should be filled with people whose absence would genuinely make your day feel incomplete—not people you feel obligated to invite.

Because they get to actually enjoy them.
Instead of spending your entire reception making the rounds to say hello to 200 guests, you can have real conversations, linger over dinner, sneak away for sunset photos, and actually remember what your wedding day felt like.
Smaller weddings also leave room for the fun stuff. Maybe that’s renting out your favorite bookstore, hosting dinner at an incredible Airbnb, or turning your wedding into an entire weekend adventure. When you’re not planning for a huge crowd, you have so much more freedom to create a day that feels like your relationship—not someone else’s expectations.
That’s really what intimate weddings are all about.
Maybe your perfect wedding looks like exchanging vows in a cozy bookstore, grabbing coffee before your ceremony, taking a stroll through downtown, and ending the night with dinner surrounded by your favorite people. Maybe it looks completely different.
There are no bonus points for following traditions that don’t fit your story. The best weddings—the ones you’ll remember for years—are the ones that feel unmistakably, unapologetically you.
Lindsey and Zane are the perfect example of why intimate weddings can be so meaningful.
After meeting through their church small group, these two quickly realized they had found something special. Just a year into their relationship, Zane proposed during a trip to Gatlinburg—and now they’re planning the next big adventure together: becoming husband and wife (with their sweet baby joining them along the way!).
When it came time to dream up their wedding day, they knew they wanted something simple, intentional, and surrounded by nature. Instead of a large traditional wedding, they chose an intimate celebration with their closest people, a cozy A-frame Airbnb, and Turkey Run State Park nearby.
With fewer than 15 guests, their day will be less about putting on a show and more about soaking in every moment—the quiet moments, the happy tears, the adventure, and the beginning of this next chapter as a family.

As an Indiana intimate wedding photographer, I believe intimate weddings aren’t about doing less—they are about making more room for the things that matter: more connection, more adventure, more time together, and a wedding day that feels completely like you.
The best intimate wedding locations aren’t always the biggest or most traditional places, they are the places that tell your story.
Maybe it’s the overlook where you had your first adventure together, an Airbnb with a view, a speakeasy, or even a bookstore where your relationship began. When your guest list is smaller, you have more flexibility to choose a space that actually feels deeply personal to you.
Your wedding location becomes more than just a backdrop of your day, it truly becomes part of your story.
One of the biggest perks of an intimate wedding is being able to surround yourself with the people who truly matter.
Instead of inviting people out of obligation, think about who you can’t imagine experiencing this day without. The people who have supported your relationship, celebrated your milestones, and will be cheering you on long after the wedding day is over.
A smaller guest list doesn’t mean less love, it means every person there has a reason for being there.
Your wedding day doesn’t have to feel like a race from one event to the next.
Intimate weddings allow you to create moments instead of just following a timeline. Make coffee together in the morning. Read private vows somewhere meaningful. Take a hike after your ceremony. Sneak away for sunset photos. Roast marshmallows on the fire. Celebrate until the stars come out.
The best memories often come from the moments that weren’t planned down to the minute.

There is no “right” way to get married.
Maybe you care most about being surrounded by nature. Maybe it’s incredible food, adventurous portraits, handwritten vows, or simply having the day feel relaxed and stress-free.
An intimate wedding gives you permission to let go of traditions that don’t feel like you and hold onto the ones that do. Your wedding should be a reflection of your relationship—not a copy of someone else’s.
When you’re planning an intimate wedding or elopement, having vendors who understand your vision makes all the difference.
Look for people who aren’t just there to provide a service, but who help you create an experience. A photographer who helps you plan locations and experiences, a florist who understands your vision, or a venue that welcomes celebrations outside of the traditional wedding mold.
The right team will encourage you to dream bigger, break a few rules, and create a wedding day that feels completely and authentically yours.

An intimate wedding in Indiana can range anywhere from $4,500 to $15,000+, depending on the location, guest count, vendors, and the type of experience you want to create. While smaller weddings are often more budget-friendly than traditional celebrations, many couples choose to use the money they save on a larger guest list to invest in the things that matter most to them.
The biggest difference? Instead of spending your budget trying to accommodate everyone, you get to spend it creating an unforgettable experience.
Every wedding is different, but here’s a general idea of where couples often invest:
Venue or Location: $500–$5,000+
Intimate weddings open up so many unique options—cozy Airbnbs, state parks, private properties, restaurants, small venues, and meaningful locations. Many couples choose places that feel personal rather than traditional.
Photography: $2,800+
Your photos are one of the few things you’ll keep long after the wedding day is over. We include more than just a few hours of coverage—we help with planning, location ideas, timelines, and creating an experience that feels like everything you have dreamed of.
Food & Drinks: $350–$1,000+
A smaller guest list can mean you have more flexibility here. Instead of feeding 150 people a standard meal, you might splurge on an incredible dinner, private chef, or your favorite restaurant!
Florals, Attire & Details: $1,000–$5,000+
Smaller weddings often allow couples to focus on unique and meaningful details… a beautiful bouquet, a statement outfit, heirloom rugs that you plan to use in your house later, the fancy chairs because why not?
Because intimate doesn’t have to mean simple.
A smaller wedding might mean fewer guests, but it can also mean more experiences. Couples may choose to spend their budget on a weekend getaway, an adventurous location, a a crazy experience with your guests (hot air balloon anyone?!).
The goal isn’t to spend less—the goal is to spend intentionally.
At the end of the day, your wedding budget should support the experience you actually want to have.

One of the best parts about an intimate wedding is that your day doesn’t have to feel rushed. You have the freedom to slow down, explore, and build a wedding experience around the moments you actually want to remember.
10:00 AM — Coffee + Slow Morning
Start the day slow. Make coffee together, eat breakfast, hang out in your favorite pajamas a little longer, and let it sink in that this is the day. No rushing. No chaos. Just the two of you soaking up the excitement.
11:00 AM — Getting Ready + Personal Moments
Whether you get ready together or separately, this part of the day is full of the good stuff… the happy nerves, the final touches, finish writing your vows, champagne pops, and all the little moments you don’t want to forget.
1:00 PM — First Look
You picked a beautiful Airbnb, now stand back to back… take a deep breath and see one another for the first time. Read handwritten letters to one another, share your hopes for the day, and get ready for a big adventure!
2:00 PM — Adventure Session
One of the best parts of choosing an intimate wedding is that your photos don’t have to be rushed. Spend time exploring trails at your favorite local park and enjoy the scenery together.
Your wedding portraits become less about posing and more about documenting the adventure you’re actually experiencing.
4:30 PM — Intimate Ceremony
Head back to the Airbnb and exchange vows surrounded by the people who matter most. With fewer than 25 guests, your ceremony can feel personal, emotional, and completely focused on your relationship.
5:30 PM — Dinner + Celebration
End the day somewhere cozy. Gather around the table, share stories, celebrate with your closest people, and enjoy a meal that feels like a reflection of your relationship.
8:00 PM — Campfire + One Last Adventure
Maybe it’s a sunset walk, a cozy fire, dessert, dancing, or just sitting together and taking it all in. Your wedding day doesn’t have to end with a big send-off…it can end exactly how you want it to.
Because that’s the beauty of an intimate wedding: less time hosting, more time experiencing. Less pressure, more memories. Less “what are we supposed to do?” and more “this feels exactly like us.”

Your wedding day doesn’t have to follow a rulebook, fit into a traditional mold, or look like anyone else’s. An intimate wedding gives you the freedom to slow down, focus on the people who matter most, and create a celebration that actually feels like you.
From cozy mornings drinking coffee together to exchanging vows somewhere meaningful, exploring a new place, or ending the night with your favorite people around the table… these smaller celebrations make room for the moments you’ll never want to forget.
Because at the end of the day, your wedding isn’t about how many people are there or how many traditions you check off a list. It’s about the story you’re starting, the memories you’re creating, and having a day that feels completely and unapologetically yours.
